How tech is solving the "phantom forest" problem in Kenya

Lake Victoria is Africa's largest lake, and it supports tens of millions of people across the region. Up in the hills nearby sits Old Bonjoge, a community once surrounded by lush forest. Decades of deforestation have stripped much of that protection away, leaving the hillside exposed. Without tree roots to hold the soil in place, storms wash it downhill, triggering flash floods that threaten homes, damage infrastructure, and carry farm chemicals straight into the lake.

Planting new trees sounds like the obvious fix. In practice, reforestation is far more complicated than it looks.

The phantom forest problem

Across the industry, many large-scale planting projects report impressive tree counts, but far fewer report survival rates. When saplings die off unnoticed months after planting, they leave behind what's known as a "phantom forest": a project that exists on paper but not on the ground. Counting trees planted has never been the same as growing a forest that lasts.

That gap between promise and outcome is exactly what veritree was set up to close.

A tech-backed partnership at Old Bonjoge

To restore the Old Bonjoge ecosystem, Planet Wild partnered with veritree and local restoration partner EarthLungs. Together, the three organizations are combining local expertise with a layered reforestation monitoring system:

  • LiDAR drones map the terrain using laser-based scanning, generating a digital model of the land so planting teams can pinpoint the best possible locations before a single tree goes in the ground.
  • Dendrometers attach to planted trees to track health and growth over time, flagging problems long before they'd otherwise be visible.
  • Bioacoustic sensors record the forest's soundscape and identify which species are returning, giving an early read on biodiversity recovery.
  • Trail cameras capture wildlife as it comes back to the area, turning recovery into something people can actually see.

Planet Wild's community funded the planting of 80,000 trees at Old Bonjoge, along with three full years of site monitoring. That funding window matters: most reforestation failures show up well after the first planting season, so multi-year tracking is what separates a real forest from a phantom one.

Why the monitoring matters as much as the planting

Every one of these tools feeds back into a single question: are these trees actually surviving? Instead of reporting a single planting number and moving on, veritree and Planet Wild are building a continuous record of forest health, species return, and watershed stability at Old Bonjoge. That record is what protects Lake Victoria's water quality and gives the local families connected to the project a real, lasting stake in the land.

It's a model for what reforestation should look like everywhere: not just trees in the ground, but proof that they're staying there.
