Once cleared for agriculture, the Chittering site now suffers from invasive grasses, degraded soils, and a declining native canopy, leaving it vulnerable to drought, heatwaves, and biodiversity loss. Located on the Northern Darling Ranges, the area’s fragmented habitats and weakened ecological resilience are signs of ongoing decline. Restoration efforts aim to reverse this trajectory by increasing native biodiversity, canopy cover, and soil health, while reducing erosion, weed presence, and habitat fragmentation, ultimately strengthening the landscape’s climate resilience and reconnecting the community with nature.
