Bringing Longleaf Pine Back to Black Creek
For 70 years, the Black Creek Site near Bruce, Florida was managed for commercial pulpwood. The last planting was in 1986 and the stand was clearcut in 2026. The land is now part of a 56,000 acre conservation preserve being restored to the historic longleaf pine ecosystem. Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) restoration supports native wiregrass groundcover, wildflowers, and rare wetland plants in the North Florida Panhandle by maintaining an open canopy that lets sunlight reach the ground, creating habitat that keystone species like the gopher tortoise rely on. This project will plant longleaf pine to create habitat for mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and plants, protect wetlands, and provide jobs in tree planting, land management and restoration.
