The Great Bear Forest Carbon Projects

Carbon Project

The Great Bear Rainforest is home to one-quarter of the world’s coastal temperate rainforest, yet it has long faced pressures from industrial logging. In 2006, a groundbreaking agreement between the Government of British Columbia, First Nations, environmental organizations, and industry stakeholders established the Great Bear Rainforest as a protected area under the Ecosystem-Based Management (EBM) framework.

This protection was enabled through government investment, philanthropic support, and carbon offset revenues.

Project Details

The project operates under an Improved Forest Management (IFM) approach, which involves:

Reducing industrial logging by prioritizing conservation over extraction.

Increasing carbon sequestration through enhanced forest protection measures.

Supporting sustainable forest management practices that align with First Nations stewardship values.

Providing long-term monitoring to ensure climate benefits are verified and sustained.

Take a Closer Look

Location: Haida Gwaii and North & Central-Mid Coast regions of British Columbia, Canada

Project Type: Improved Forest Management (IFM)

Size: Over 5 million hectares of Indigenous-managed temperate rainforest

Annual Emissions Reductions: ~900,000 tonnes of CO₂e avoided per year

Carbon Benefits: Prevents large-scale CO₂ emissions by reducing industrial logging in old-growth and culturally significant forests

Co-Benefits: Protects critical wildlife habitat (including grizzly bear, spirit bear, and migratory bird species), supports First Nations-led governance and stewardship, strengthens local economies, and enhances climate resilience in coastal communities

Project Developers: Coastal First Nations – Great Bear Initiative

Certification: Verified under the BC Forest Carbon Offset Protocol (FCOP)
