The Lost Trail IFM Project

Lost Trail National Wildlife Refuge

On the edge of the Lost Trail National Wildlife Refuge, in Western Montana grizzly country, this forest is being left to keep growing.

It's a working forest, not a preserve or a plantation, where the owner decided that longer rotations, deferred harvest and thinning for fire resilience are the better strategy for the land. The carbon stays in the trees, and habitat for grizzly bear, Canada lynx and wolverine stays intact.

How the Project Works

The project operates under an Improved Forest Management (IFM) approach, which involves:

Longer Rotations

Trees grow bigger and older than they would on a typical industrial harvest schedule.

Measured Carbon Gain

Each year the extra carbon standing in the forest is measured against business as usual and audited by independent third parties.

Legal Protection

A conservation easement, Montana streamside rules and a native fish habitat plan underpin the project.

Permanence

20% of every issuance goes to ACR's buffer pool, backed by a 40-year project commitment.

Carbon Benefits: Nearly all credits are removals: carbon added to the forest by letting trees keep growing

Co-Benefits: Habitat for grizzly bear, Canada lynx and wolverine, plus fisher, redband trout and westslope cutthroat trout. The property is SFI and FSC certified

Know What You're Buying

The Great Bear Rainforest is home to one-quarter of the world's coastal temperate rainforest, yet it has long faced pressure from industrial logging.

In 2006, an agreement between the Government of British Columbia, First Nations, environmental organizations and industry established the area under the Ecosystem-Based Management framework. To keep the forest intact while supporting First Nations communities, the Great Bear Forest Carbon Project launched in 2011 to generate lasting revenue through carbon finance.
