Restoring Coastal Communities

The Primera Cruz Mangrove Site is facing an alarming rate of deforestation, with most areas sadly only remaining of small patches of isolated forest. Despite the fact that Brazil’s economy is growing, Maranhao has the lowest human development index score in the country. The community primarily relies on fishing for their livelihood. Factors of land degradation include the illegal removal of trees for firewood, construction for houses, charcoal manufacturing and residual impact of salt production operations.
